XXXVII Reasons Jacksonville knocks off the Colts tonight.

The Colts’ XXXVII reasons
Fleming By David Fleming

Thirty-seven reasons why the Jags will knock off the undefeated and AFC-top-seeded Colts on Thursday night.

I. Maurice Jones-Drew has been in a funk since fantasy football geeks cursed him for his kneel-down against the Jets a month ago, but said geeks will be so preoccupied with getting enough blue body paint for the opening of Avatar, they will forget to renew the curse before Thursday.

II. On Sunday, Indy set the record for most consecutive victories (22) and most wins in a decade (114). The Colts also secured a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. They have 34 days until their next meaningful game. Players are human. And they are ripe for a gigantic letdown.

III. The Colts will rest their injured starters. Why? Because that’s what Tony Dungy’s mentor, Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll did in 1978 when Dungy won a Super Bowl with the Steelers. Noll’s decision in 1978 allowed Dungy, a backup, to contribute to the team’s third world championship by starting the last two games of the season. You cannot imagine what a huge impact that had on Dungy, and, I’m sure, his successor, Jim Caldwell. The idea being: If we’re gonna make history, we’re gonna do it as a team, a family, and it will be up to everyone on the roster — not just the stars.

IV. As a kid, Jags veteran wideout Torry Holt worked long hours in the tobacco fields near Greensboro, N.C., where avoiding snakes gave him his moves and harvesting those plants gave him his hand strength. More than 13,000 receiving yards later, how do you root against that?

V. On Miami’s final six drives in Week 12, the Jags’ defense, led by no-name ‘backers Daryl Smith and Justin Durant, forced two turnovers and four punts.

VI. A big early lead by the Colts could actually play right into the Jags’ game plan by forcing Indy to sit its starters sooner than they wanted and leaving plenty of time for the Jags to throttle the Colts’ B Team.

VII. Be honest, couldn’t you see the Jags crushing the Colts and then pounding the Patriots and then losing to the Browns to miss the playoffs for the ninth time in the last 11 years?

VIII. This past weekend, I missed breaking two hours in a half marathon by 210 seconds. So, I’m kinda due.

IX. Manning’s “glute” was listed on the Colts’ injury report last week. Honest.

X. Mike Sims-Walker, the Jags’ leading receiver who has been bothered by a bad calf, was a full participant in practice on Tuesday.

XI. No way QB David Garrard goes 0-for-3 — again — in potential game-winning drives in the fourth quarter like he did against Miami. Not if he wants to keep his job, anyway.

XII. As bad as the Jags’ passing defense is (239 ypg), the Colts are only 12 yards better.

XIII. Manning deserves the MVP award every year, that’s no secret. But he doesn’t need this game for his 2009 MVP campaign, since he’s not getting it. It’s Drew Brees’ award by a landslide, people.

XIV. This time of year, nothing trumps desperation. And you can’t get more frantic than Jacksonville. The team has missed the playoffs eight of the last 10 years and its supposed leaders, like Garrard and coach Jack Del Rio, are out of excuses. But the game also transcends records, standings and playoff scenarios and could likely determine the long-term viability of the NFL in this market — a place where the Jags have had seven games blacked out after losing 17,000 season-ticket holders in the last year. This is as much about the future of pro football on the First Coast as it is the AFC South.

XV. The Jags average 40 more yards per game rushing (128 to 88) than the Colts and their banged-up back, Joseph Addai, which could be a big deal if it translates into time of possession and keeping you-know-who off the field.

XVI. The Colts have given up an average of 120 yards rushing their last three games.

XVII. At one point on Sunday against Denver, Manning was 6-of-18 for 54 yards, three picks and a single TD. He has thrown three picks in a game only twice in the last seven years. Guess who has as many picks (13) as the Broncos. Yep, the Jags.

XVIII. Manning also had a season-low 47.6 passer rating.

XIX. Yes, Indy has won seven of the last nine games between these two teams, but the last four were all decided by seven points or fewer.

XX. During the Super Bowl in Jacksonville, my older brother and I sneaked into the Playboy party through the kitchen.

XXI. The Jags held Indy to a season-low 14 points in Week 1. And the longer the season goes on, the more finesse teams yield to the physical ones.

XXII. Jacksonville hasn’t lost back-to-back games since starting 0-2, and the Jags have rebounded from each of their last four losses with a win.

XXIII. You can learn a lot of math in four days. Which means the Jags, who had 12 men on the field twice and 10 men on the field once at critical stages during their loss to the Dolphins, might actually line up correctly this week.

XXIV. The Colts tried to camouflage their hobbled secondary by changing up personnel and rolling coverage over the top of Denver’s Brandon Marshall, and the dude still caught an NFL-record 21 passes.

XXV. There’s very little chance that Florida Gov. Charlie Crist will be able to pass a special law by Thursday making Tim Tebow the Jags’ quarterback.

XXVI. Maurice-Jones Drew has 14 touchdowns — the most in a single season in Jags history. And he needs to pad that a bit for safekeeping.

XXVII. When I wrote this, it was 20 degrees in Indy and 70 in Jacksonville.

XXVIII. Reggie Wayne had 10 catches for 162 yards in the first game, but he hasn’t had more than 50 yards receiving in a month.

XXIX. Be honest, by the time you watch the 378th commercial in which Peyton Manning is pretending to be warm, fun and accessible, a little part of you will be rooting for the Jags, too.

XXX. If the Jags win out, they’re in.

XXXI. Just three of the Colts’ 13 wins have come over teams more than one game over .500. The Jags are — gulp — 7-6.

XXXII. Peyton is already a hero. I mean Jacksonville mayor John Peyton who reformed the city’s football booster group (”Touchdown Jacksonville”) and not only rallied to get the team’s first sellout of the season but also kicked in $150,000 for something called the Ultimate Tealgate Party.

XXXIII. Indy coach Jim Caldwell has said the Colts will not change their approach, but GM Bill Polian has been saying for weeks that the team will rest its injured starters. Guess who wins that battle?

XXXIV. I was in Lucas Oil Stadium in Week 9 for the Colts’ 20-17 win over the Texans and I still can’t figure out how they won.

XXXV. Even though they didn’t practice Monday, the Colts were still forced to file an injury report. They listed 29 players.

XXXVI. All-world defensive end Dwight Freeney’s messed up abdomen needs rest. So does DE Robert Mathis’ quad, OT Charlie Johnson’s foot and cornerback Jerraud Powers hammy. If your ultimate goal is another Super Bowl ring and not some pretty record, it would be negligent to play these guys if they’re hurting.

XXXVII. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I went to the trouble of using roman numerals, therefore giving this list an air of scholarly authority as compared to other lists that use just regular old numbers. Enjoy the upset.

Jaguars Potpourri

By Alfie Cro
http://jac.scout.com/2/929745.html

Some Fun Stats:

Sunday’s 14-10 loss to Miami was the seventh game this season that David Garrard did not throw a touchdown pass. Since 2006, David Garrard has only thrown touchdown passes equal to or greater than games played twice.

Maurice Jones-Drew is on pace to rush for more touchdowns than David Garrard is on pace to throw for. In the modern era, this has been accomplished rarely. Some notable instances were in 2005 when Shaun Alexander of the Seattle Seahawks broke the NFL single season rushing record with 27 rushing TD’s and in 2006 when LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers broke Alexander’s record with 28 rushing touchdowns.

David Garrard is on pace to throw for more than 3,000 yards for the second time in his career (2008) and has thrown double digit touchdowns for the fourth season in a row.

Cornerback Tyron Brackenridge and safety Gerald Alexander have both forced key turnovers two games in a row. Both have looked like solid roster additions, as Brackenridge looks to have solidified his nickel-back position by his play in relief of injured cornerback Rashean Mathis. Newly acquired safety Anthony Smith has now contributed to a turnover in some way in three of the last four games.

Derrick Harvey had his second game in a row with a sack against Miami. He has really come on after settling in the left defensive end position. He now has a pair of sacks on the season and once again leads the team in quarterback pressures.

Playoffs and the Upcoming Matchup:

Amazingly enough, the Jacksonville Jaguars still hold the sixth seed in the AFC playoff race. However, it’s very possibly that a log jam of teams could wind up at 7-7 after this weekend. Jacksonville could be one of them if they lose to the Colts, but Colts head coach Jim Caldwell essentially stated the Colts would not be resting their starters Thursday. To guarantee the playoffs, the Jacksonville Jaguars would have to win out in their final three games against the Indianapolis Colts, and on the road against the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns.

With Brian Witherspoon being released yesterday, it’s likely that Nate Hughes will get some reps as a kickoff returner. Mike Thomas has had some success returning kicks, but it is believed that using him for punt returns will be more prudent. Thomas is a useful cog in the Jaguars offense, and using him as a primary kick returner limits his work while the offense is on the field. Many have questioned why Witherspoon was waived, and it comes down to something simple: Brock Bolen can cover kicks like Greg Jones did, Witherspoon can’t.

On the injury front, after watching “All Access” last night, it appears Clint Ingram KO’d himself in the Miami game. I wouldn’t expect him to play on Thursday night if that is the case, not to mention the fact that undrafted rookie Russell Allen has seemingly outplayed Ingram so far this year.

OHHH Steeler fan, I hope you are enjoying the ‘hell’ you have unleashed here in December. It’s one thing to miss the playoffs, but to lose to the Brady Quinn and the Browns is just plain sad. I am personally crossing the Steelers off as contenders for sure. Now if you and your Terrible Towels can knock off the Ravens, the Jags will be in good shape.

Here is a Preview of the New York versus Tampa game. The Jets are our biggest threat in my opinion…

NFL Preview – N.Y. Jets (6-6) at Tampa Bay (1-11)

By Lyle Fitzsimmons, Sports Network

The Sports Network

It’s a good thing the game’s in Florida.

Because if it were anywhere else than a temperate locale just a short jaunt from the Gulf of Mexico – game time forecast, 78 degrees – it might be a bit difficult to get anyone to pay attention while thinking about what could have been.

A year ago, an early-December matchup between the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers would have featured two nine-win teams angling for conference positioning, not to mention Brett Favre heading to Raymond James Stadium for the first time since it almost became his home field.

Add in Eric Mangini vs. Jon Gruden on the sidelines and it’s an instant classic.

This year, though… things are a trifle different.

With just one win in 12 games, the Bucs’ sights are set far more on April draft boards than January playoff tickets. As for the Jets, a 3-0 start followed by a 3-6 encore yields precious little reason for rampant postseason optimism, particularly with a late-season schedule that still features Atlanta, Indianapolis and Cincinnati.

Mangini has taken his paranoid robot show to Cleveland.

Gruden is serving as Ron Jaworski’s slightly less-verbose foil in the ESPN broadcast booth.

And that Favre fella…well, let’s just say he landed on his feet up north.

To top it off, even the tenuous “battle of rookie quarterbacks” angle took a fatal hit on Wednesday, when the Jets announced prized No. 5 draft pick Mark Sanchez would not only not play this weekend as he nurses a sore right knee back to health – he won’t even make the 1,008-mile trip from suburban Newark to suburban St. Petersburg.

Kellen Clemens, the 2005 draft pick from Oregon who won three times in eight starts when last asked to lead the team two years ago, will get the call again Sunday. He completed one pass for 14 yards in Sanchez’s absence last week against Buffalo.

Former Tennessee standout Erik Ainge will serve as his backup.

Rex Ryan’s decision to leave Sanchez in the chilly northeast raised the ire of his gimpy prodigy and resulted in the New York Daily News running a back-page picture of the quarterback Thursday under the headline “Baby Sitting: Mark whines as Rex opts to go with Clemens against Bucs.”

For Tampa Bay, 21-year-old Josh Freeman – the 6-foot-6 Kansas State product whom some Jets fans had coveted prior to last April’s draft – makes his seventh appearance since officially taking the reins from the ineffectual two-headed signal-calling monster that was Byron Leftwich and Josh Johnson.

Freeman piloted the Bucs to their lone win – a 38-28 defeat of Green Bay on Nov. 8 – and has been mildly effective along the way as a whole, completing 54.4 percent of his passes for 1,114 yards, seven touchdowns and a very rookie- like 10 interceptions.

Five of the 10 picks came last week at Carolina, a game Tampa Bay lost, 16-6.

“We just have to make better decisions at the end,” Bucs coach Raheem Morris said of Freeman, who threw three of the five INTs while deep in Panthers territory. “We’ve got to make better plays at the end. We’re still looking for that guy to stand up and be the closer for us. We’ve got one at quarterback (in Freeman). He just didn’t have a good day in the red zone.”

SERIES HISTORY

The Jets have a 8-1 lead in their all-time series with the Buccaneers, and have won six in a row since Tampa notched its only win in the series, in 1984 at home. The Jets were 14-12 home winners when the clubs last met, in 2005, and earned a 21-17 decision when they last visited Tampa Bay in 2000. New York is 2-1 all-time in series road games, with the other win coming in 2000.

Jaguars AFC Playoff Picture

// December 9th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Game Preview, Playoffs??? Playoffs!!!?

I am not a mathematician but here is a quick breakdown of the Jaguars playoffs.

Here are is the breakdown of the four 6-6 Teams in the AFC in order.

Baltimore
N.Y. Jets
Miami
Pittsburgh

While the Jags still have to play the Peyton Manning and the Colts as well as New England here is the good news.

The Jags have a head to head with Miami this week. Miami also has to play @Tennessee, Houston, Pittsburgh. that should take either the Steelers or Miami out of the picture.

The Jets have Tampa and Atlanta, but then have Indianapolis and Cincinnati who may be resting starters. I think the Jets have the easiest road in.

The Ravens have Detroit and Chicago next, but finish @Pittsburgh and @Oakland who are a new team with Gradkowski at the helm.

Of Pittsburgh’s teams left, they are @Cleveland, but finish with playoff contenders Green Bay, Baltimore, and Miami. Stick a fork in the Steelers. A red hot, sharp, pitchfork befitting of the devil himself Hines Ward.

Essentially, Miami, Baltimore, and the Steelers will all be beating each other up with only the Jets seem to have a shot.

The Jags at minimum have to go 2-2 in the final game, so this makes Sunday’s homestand against Miami a playoff game. Be Teal and get down to JMS! See you there.

Jacksonville Jaguars

From the politician stepping out of his realm department: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has told the Jaguars he thinks they should draft Tim Tebow.

The next two likely determine the Jaguars’ playoff fate, says Vito Stellino.

“There’s absolutely no excuse for there not to be a huge walk-up crowd for this game because this is practically a do-or-die playoff scenario. For the Jaguars, it’s just about a play-in or play-out game for the postseason.” Gene Frenette’s column.

The Jaguars are 9,000 tickets away from a sellout and no blackout for the Miami game, says Michael C. Wright.

The Dolphins are the team to beat in the wild-card race, says Vic Ketchman.
